Volunteering has been streamlined this year, which should make it easier for everyone. Here is a summary of the changes:
- Registration opens on April 1. Everyone should register at that time.
- The volunteer fee for everyone is the same: $45. Every volunteer will receive:
- Payment of the volunteer fee is due at time of registration, either by credit card if registering online, or by check if mailing a paper application. You will not be able to register online and mail a check, it all must be done at once.
Security will have a separate color shirt as there is a need to distinguish them from other volunteers. Security will get green shirts to wear both days so they are consistent. All other volunteers will get a white shirt for Saturday, and a yellow shirt for Sunday.
- Since The Classic is August 8-10 and during usual vacation times, we will have training in both June and July to minimize vacation conflicts. The training page has all the details.
These considerations still apply:
- Volunteers whose jobs require them to work late on Friday or Saturday, and early again the next day, will be responsible for their own lodging expenses. We have secured discounted hotel rates to help ease this cost. When you are initially assigned, information on rates and hotels will be provided by your Division Manager.
- Volunteers are responsible for their own transportation to Pinehurst. We will have a central site in Pinehurst for volunteer check-in and provide transportation to the courses for volunteers. You should carpool where possible. Volunteers will not be able to park at the Pinehurst Clubhouse.

The Steps To Become a Jimmy V Volunteer:
- Fill out a volunteer application. You can apply online. Create a user id and assign yourself a password, fill out your information, and submit it. Returning volunteers can sign in like last year and update their information. If applying online, you must pay the volunteer fee with a credit card. You will not be able to save your information without making a payment. Or, you can print one, fill it out, and mail it to the address on the form, including your check for the volunteer fee. Applications submitted without a volunteer fee will not be considered. Download a blank application.
- On the application, tell us what position you want. All open volunteer positions are described below. If you do not see the position you want, select Other and write it in the Preferences field.
- Once assigned, you will receive a postcard with your assignment and coordinator name.
- Attend training. You must attend one training session every year, even if you are an experienced volunteer. This is especially critical this year. (See training schedules)
- Pick up your shirt, hat, and pin. Since they are all given out at your training session, you can do both at the same time!
That's all there is to it! You will be on the V Team! You will be part of a nationwide effort to get rid of cancer in our lifetime. You will contribute to helping researchers make gains, which are happening every day. You will be keeping alive the dream that Jim Valvano had: to never give up, never ever give up!
