Another of the Jimmy V extended family has reached the national stage and needs your votes! Katherine Fritsch, 8 years old, is on the voting stage until noon on Thursday on the CBS Early Show. Go to the week 9 page and look at her video--and more importantly, vote for her! She began her public singing career at the Jimmy V Celebrity Junior Golf Classic pairings party last year, and frequently mentions that when interviewed.

Remember, voting ends Thursday, February 8 at noon for this round. So don't delay! We will keep you posted on her results as soon as we know them.

Check out College Football this Saturday. Not only will there be great games, but the V Foundation will be a prominent participant. National College Football Day is this Saturday Nov. 4. It is a holiday created by the AT&T Cotton Bowl to commemorate the birth of college football when Rutgers (Jimmy V's alma mater) defeated Princeton in 1869. This year, the AT&T Cotton Bowl has partnered with The V Foundation for Cancer Research to increase awareness about men’s cancers. So enjoy your football this Saturday and listen for references to the V Foundation!

Hopefully all of you have received an email, or have seen in the news, that the 2007 Classic will be in Pinehurst. I'm sure you all have questions and we are posting some more info and some answers on this web site as soon as our web developer can get them up. A great deal is not yet known, and the management team has a lot of planning to do before all questions can be answered. I can tell you that volunteer opportunities will exist, both for V Week here in the Triangle and the Classic in Pinehurst. Exactly how many and what kind, we don't know yet. We will communicate that when it's determined. So please watch this space and your newsletter for the most up to date info. And please be sure we have your current email and home addresses!

Thanks to the kind folks at Jack Astor's restaurant in Cary, we had a very nice evening for about 100 volunteers on Wednesday. It was good to see so many there, including many new faces. We may indeed be doing more with Jack Astor's so please keep your eyes on this spot for other activities. Until then, enjoy the football.. well, maybe just enjoy the football weather!

Another successful Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic is in the books and it really was a fantastic weekend. All the volunteers went the extra mile and all with a smile. From a record-breaking Reverse Raffle to a very musical Pairings Party, including an overtime Nike Cup and new V Gala venua at RBC, and culminating in a gorgeous day of golf on Sunday, this year's Classic could not have turned out better.

A heartfelt thank you from the Board and management team of the Classic to all our volunteers and sponsors and guests. We are that much closer to a cure because of you.

Volunteers going to Green Hope HS for the shuttle to Prestonwood should allow themselves some extra time. Carpenter-Upchurch Rd. is currently closed at High House. You may be better off coming up Highway 55 and turning onto Morrisville Carpenter Rd depending on your starting point. Here is a map of the detour.
Please leave yourself some extra time.

The prior survey showed 47% believing that the purple shirts were for Hosts. They were correct! The final shirt we are wearing is a red and orange stripe, and if you have been paying attention you will know that it is for Captains and Coordinators. Thanks for having a bit of fun with this guessing game. Now it is time to get to work, smile, and have a great 2006 Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic!

Well, we got you with the last uniform color. Only 35% correctly guessed that the Green shirts will be worn by MOST VOLUNTEERS this year. Let's look at our third shirt. Be sure to vote for Martha tonite on the Fox show "So You Think You Can Dance". An earlier blog entry noted she is the daughter of a volunteer. She will be the third dancer-so make a note of the number and program it into your phones. You can start dialing at 10.

You don't have to listen to the entire recorded message. Once it connects, you have voted and you can hang up and redial. This week it is totally the voter's decision, the judges are just there to make comments. So it is vitally important for her to get the votes tonight.

ESPN Radio has a bunch of online auctions this week, all benefiting the V Foundation. You can get a Torry Holt football, various signed jerseys, and even be in a sausage race. If you don't know what that is, you'll have to check out the ESPN Radio auctions to find out.

A vaccine to prevent cervical cancer.. this is the kind of progress that makes it easy for us to stand in the rain, bake in the sun, smile when we are tired. According to medical experts, cervical cancer is the second most important cancer in women after breast cancer. Read more about a vaccine that can be given to females 9-26 years old that could
prevent 70% of cervical cancers. They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I'd say it's worth a life.

Being a Stanley Cup Champion has accelerated Mike Commodore's schedule so the big haircut happened on Thursday June 22. Mike had his hair cut at Generations Salon and Day Spa in the Brierdale shopping center. You can still make a donation to the Junior as part of the Chop the Mop program by visiting the donation web page. More pictures will be posted soon on this page. One of our Jimmy V volunteers, Cheryl Russell, has a daughter participating on the FOX TV contest "So You Think You Can Dance?". Her name is Martha Nichols and is currently in the Top 20 of all the dancers. You can follow her on the show Wednesday and Thursday nights at 9 here in Raleigh (but check local listings). Cheryl is very proud of her as well she should be. Good luck Martha!

Dick Vitale has been a part of the V Foundation and our Classic since the beginning. So when he says "Cancer is in for the fight of its life" you know he means it. When did he say that? At his very own event to raise money for the V Foundation. Check out the Dick Vitale article about his event. Working together, and with Dick's enthusiasm, we can accomplish our goal!

CHOP the MOP

If anyone can be said to have a mop of hair, it is Mike Commodore of our hometown Carolina Hurricanes. Once the season is over, it all must go. It will, and the Jimmy V Junior will be the beneficiary. Up to ten people will be given the opportunity to help cut off that hair. You may compete for a spot via ebay auctions. Search ebay for "Mike Commodore Jimmy V" (but don't use the quotes). Each auction will last only a few days so check it out now! If being a barber is not your thing, you may also donate cash to support him by visiting his page in our online store.

Important announcment: Due to the schedule of our successful Carolina Hurricanes, the Jimmy V celebrity Junior Golf Classic has been rescheduled to Monday, July 24 at 8:30 am. The Hurricanes are presenting sponsors and huge participants in the Junior and we congratulate them on their playoff run. A formal update will be up soon on the Junior web site. Time to let everyone in on a little secret. For the past two issues, we have placed a phrase in the middle of a newsletter article, and the first person who sees it and responds gets a prize. So far, only one person has responded, and he responded both times. William Routh of Greensboro has won a Jimmy V pullover shirt, sleeve of golf balls, and a hat. We want you to really read this blog and the newsletter, and have some fun doing both. We'll continue to play this little game.. how about you?

As good a job as we (and the V Foundation) have done raising money for cancer research, we can't do it alone. This week's Sports Illustrated has a great article on the passion that Lance Armstrong has for stomping out this awful disease. You can read it online at the SI Web site.

His foundation has rasied $146M so far, and he is aiming for $1 billion. How's that for a number! It feels good to have someone like Lance on our side.

Hi.. we sure had a good time at the Volunteer kickoff. Pictures are posted in the News section on the right. More playoff hockey means more Cool Bars and more chances to see the Junior's raffle prize, the Harley. That means Cary on Wednesday and Raleigh on Saturday.

Summerlike temps for the weekend (did I hear 90?) seem to be in store for us in Raleigh. One task we had to complete before summer was selecting the site of our V Gala for the Classic due to the razing of the old Civic Center. The choice: RBC Center! Finally, the chance for some of us to be on the court in front of thousands. Who cares if they are all empty seats? You can read more about the selection and decorating strategies in an upcoming newsletter article. You do read those, don't you? It really does pay.

Hi all.. Recruiting is the name of the game today. While we are not out recruiting a new coach, we are recruiting volunteers. We have over 75 volunteers already signed up, which is a good start. We will be trying for some NC State students and fans by being at the NC State football spring game on Saturday (April 8). If you are going, or know someone who is, have them come drop by and pick up an application. Have a great weekend!
