This Tuesday, May 20, Red Hot, and Blue at 1900 Hillsborough St. (the old Darryl's spot) will have a grand opening with cover charge donated to the Kay Yow WBCA Cancer Fund. Cover is $5 and form 6-9 pm there will be food, fun, and live music. Have a good time and support Kay Yow's fight against cancer!

Condolences to Muddy

The mother of Steve Sophis has passed away after a long, brave fight against cancer. Steve, known affectionately to us all as Muddy, has been as committed to the Classic as anyone there is. His Mom obviously inspired his dedication to us. Muddy would drive all the way from Ohio every year and help us the whole week of the Classic. In lieu of flowers, Muddy would like donations sent to the V Foundation for Cancer Research in the name of Stacy Sophis at http://www.jimmyv.org

Please accept our heartfelt condolences, Muddy. You'll get a hug from us this August.

How you can you "Show Your Spirit"

The V Foundation supports getting into the spirit of March Madness through the Show Your Spirit program. You can organize a group to show their spirit in your office, school, neighborhood - anywhere. As an organizer, you register your group and the V Foundation sends you a Show Your Spirit kit. People in your group participate by donating at least $5 and you give them a "Don't Give Up, Don't Ever Give Up" pin, and they can wear their school colors when the NCAA Tournament begins on Thursday and Friday, March 20 & 21.

Jimmy V Week - and the Classic on ESPN2

Jimmy V Week begins tonight on ESPN, with the simultaneous airing of Jim's ESPY speech at 7pm on all ESPN channels, streaming internet, and even on the big screen at Times Square! Catch it tonight (Wednesday) before watching more of the ACC-Big10 Challenge.

Then on Sunday, December 2 at 2:30pm, ESPN2 will broadcast the 2007 Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic. See if you made the broadcast, or if you ended up on the cutting room floor!

The 2007 Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic is over and it was another rousing success. When you consider all the unknowns associated with a new venue, the results were fantastic. You should all be proud. We extend our thanks to the Pinehurst staff and community for their true partnership. Welcome to the Jimmy V family!

If you are already missing your fellow volunteers, please join us at a very special Carolina Hurricanes game. October 22 has been designated Hockey Fights Cancer Night. When the Hurricanes face off against the Vancouver Canucks, Jimmy V gets a portion of tickets sold. To get tickets, you must use this order form
Anyone can get tickets using that form, so bring your family and friends and call your volunteer buddies. To guarantee seating together, all tickets must be requested on one form. Enjoy the game, and see you there!

This map contains markers for parking, hotels, and dropoff points on course. It is best viewed in hybrid mode so you get the aerial view with street names. Training Starts Tuesday 8/7

It's August so that means prep for the Classic is in full swing. That means training sessions. The first one is Tuesday 8/7 (Marshals) and they continue for 2 weeks. To find the session for you, see the complete volunteer schedule. Be sure you attend one and learn how different things will be this year, and get your volunteer uniform.

Sometimes it takes a sad event to reinforce why we try so hard to put on a great Golf Classic. This week saw us lose two people who are friends of the V Foundation. You may have seen Dakoda Dowd's mother follow her around during last year's Classic. Kelly Jo Dowd was fighting cancer and this week she lost that battle. In addition, Payton Wright, a young girl who was a favorite of Dick Vitale and our own volunteer Susan Albano, also was a victim of cancer. Not a good week. But it increases our resolve and helps us tighten our belt a little more, maybe give a little more, in hopes we can generate enough money to prevent this from happening to others.

Chris Fowler of ESPN wrote this article on ESPN.com about Lance Armstrong and his association with the V Foundation. He mentions that when Lance was starting his own foundation, he came to our Golf Classic (remember his bike ride prior to Classic weekend?) and was inspired by our event. It also has a neat Jimmy V story in it. Good reading. Everyone who contributes to the Classis should be proud.

Katherine - So Close!

Katherine Fritsch, who wowed the Jimmy V Junior with her singing, got all the way to the finals of the CBS Early Show segment called "Living Room Live - Kids Edition". She did a great job and came close to winning, but was edged out by a fellow North Carolinian from Goldsboro. Well done, Katherine, and we hope to see you at the Junior again.

Another of the Jimmy V extended family has reached the national stage and needs your votes! Katherine Fritsch, 8 years old, is on the voting stage until noon on Thursday on the CBS Early Show. Go to the week 9 page and look at her video--and more importantly, vote for her! She began her public singing career at the Jimmy V Celebrity Junior Golf Classic pairings party last year, and frequently mentions that when interviewed.

Remember, voting ends Thursday, February 8 at noon for this round. So don't delay! We will keep you posted on her results as soon as we know them.

Check out College Football this Saturday. Not only will there be great games, but the V Foundation will be a prominent participant. National College Football Day is this Saturday Nov. 4. It is a holiday created by the AT&T Cotton Bowl to commemorate the birth of college football when Rutgers (Jimmy V's alma mater) defeated Princeton in 1869. This year, the AT&T Cotton Bowl has partnered with The V Foundation for Cancer Research to increase awareness about men’s cancers. So enjoy your football this Saturday and listen for references to the V Foundation!

Hopefully all of you have received an email, or have seen in the news, that the 2007 Classic will be in Pinehurst. I'm sure you all have questions and we are posting some more info and some answers on this web site as soon as our web developer can get them up. A great deal is not yet known, and the management team has a lot of planning to do before all questions can be answered. I can tell you that volunteer opportunities will exist, both for V Week here in the Triangle and the Classic in Pinehurst. Exactly how many and what kind, we don't know yet. We will communicate that when it's determined. So please watch this space and your newsletter for the most up to date info. And please be sure we have your current email and home addresses!

Thanks to the kind folks at Jack Astor's restaurant in Cary, we had a very nice evening for about 100 volunteers on Wednesday. It was good to see so many there, including many new faces. We may indeed be doing more with Jack Astor's so please keep your eyes on this spot for other activities. Until then, enjoy the football.. well, maybe just enjoy the football weather!

Another successful Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic is in the books and it really was a fantastic weekend. All the volunteers went the extra mile and all with a smile. From a record-breaking Reverse Raffle to a very musical Pairings Party, including an overtime Nike Cup and new V Gala venua at RBC, and culminating in a gorgeous day of golf on Sunday, this year's Classic could not have turned out better.

A heartfelt thank you from the Board and management team of the Classic to all our volunteers and sponsors and guests. We are that much closer to a cure because of you.

Volunteers going to Green Hope HS for the shuttle to Prestonwood should allow themselves some extra time. Carpenter-Upchurch Rd. is currently closed at High House. You may be better off coming up Highway 55 and turning onto Morrisville Carpenter Rd depending on your starting point. Here is a map of the detour.
Please leave yourself some extra time.

The prior survey showed 47% believing that the purple shirts were for Hosts. They were correct! The final shirt we are wearing is a red and orange stripe, and if you have been paying attention you will know that it is for Captains and Coordinators. Thanks for having a bit of fun with this guessing game. Now it is time to get to work, smile, and have a great 2006 Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic!

Be sure to vote for Martha tonite on the Fox show "So You Think You Can Dance". An earlier blog entry noted she is the daughter of a volunteer. She will be the third dancer-so make a note of the number and program it into your phones. You can start dialing at 10.

You don't have to listen to the entire recorded message. Once it connects, you have voted and you can hang up and redial. This week it is totally the voter's decision, the judges are just there to make comments. So it is vitally important for her to get the votes tonight.

According to medical experts, cervical cancer is the second most important cancer in women after breast cancer. Read more about a vaccine that can be given to females 9-26 years old that could
